Comfort Feeding Provides Great Alternative to Feeding Tube for People with Alzheimer's

One question that I’ve seen members of this Alzheimer’s community often ask involves feeding a loved one with Alzheimer’s. As dementia takes over a loved one’s mind, it also can – and probably will – take over the person’s abili...

Hi Dorian -

Another GREAT article.  Thank you!

Mom is to the point I am personally feeding her.  It is quite a treat when I set the bowl down only to discover that after a bit she has picked it up and remembers how to put food on her spoon/fork and into her mouth.  Quite a treat, indeed...  especially if she remembers how to swalow and then does so.

As it is, she only eats a half a small bowl of food, if that, each of two meals.  Often only a part of a bowl in a day's time.  Naturally it makes me sad and at times quite frustrated, thinking I am not doing enough to help her.  I know that I am, but you well know how we each deal with certain aspects of our emotions.

She is now as happy as I can help her to be and as far as eating goes, progressing well according to my understanding of the later times Alzheimer's Disease brings forth.  With respect to feeding tubes, I've looked to the not too distant future and have come to terms with what I'll do according to her Living Will.

All is maintained pretty well except when, strange as it might seem, once in a great while when returning to some degree of cognition she becomes momentarily aware of her circumstance...  and then (thankfully, also momentary) she enters into a short time of tears and great sadness.  One almost thinks it best her awareness of her circumstances stays away.

Thank you, again.
