    Dorain,

    Your story rings true. I recently brought a birthday card for my mother to sign for my son who was turning 21.  She took the card and the pen and asked, "What do I write?"  I replied, "Just sign your name mom."  She wrote (with that same intensity you described) 'I love Tony, Nana.'  I gave it to my son for her and I hope he treasures it.
