Dorian, thanks for the post.
It is so sad that people with dementia really hate the hospitals.
My FIL had to move to a residential home/nursing home so that he would not be hospitalized too many times. Indeed he has never had to stay in the hospital although he went to the ER twice after the move. There are so many stories I can tell about my FIL being agitated in the hospital overnight. He would not sleep overnight and wanted to escape but worried about no food... All kinds of fantasies were in his mind. So bad that he ended up thinking the hospital wanted to kill him when he left the hospital. It took him 2 years to be off this death issue.
I am not a medical person so I don't know what is wrong with the hospital. Lots of people including some general nurses still don't understand how to cope with dementia. It is true that they cannot know every elder's fantasy to deal with it, but they should at least have the basic attitude that are fit for dementia people. Why does it have to take a residential home for memory impaired to do the right thing? That is why I am reluctant to send my FIL to the hospital for feeding tube or food IV in the future as my husband wished for trial period... Staying in the hospital is really a horrible experience for my FIL.
Thanks for bringing this topic for attention.
Regards,
Nina
My dad had a horrible outcome from the hospital. I'm with you on this one, Dorian.
