Frightening statistics, Dorian. I do know elders who took out long-term care insurance year ago. Some of them have great policies that are helping them pay for in-home care and other resources. Some of them just had "nursing home" policies and they don't cover nearly enough at today's rates.
Getting LTC insurance after one hits 60 or beyond is generally so expensive, if it can be gotten at all, that it isn't feasible. But if people plan ahead, as you suggest, and start young, it can be a good choice.
