It is also 2-way street; it is also important to educate the caregivers so that they know when the patient would become angry and violent/abusive toward the caregivers. The understanding of dementia can help the caregiving situations.

elder abuse and exploitation
Irene Masiello
Sunday, March 16, 2008 at 03:27 PMHi Jacqueline-Thanks for an opportunity to let your readers know that elder abuse and exploitation are an American pandemic already. In the back of my book there are pages and pages of danger signals and warning signs of abusive tactics and what the early warning signs are. We are thinking about adding additional material to Paradise Costs and have one of this countries foremost experts on geriatric and forensic psychiatry reading to add his work to my book. We will do everything we can to foster awareness on every level of elder care. There is much that can be done to prevent it but like every thing people need awareness. I begins with seeing our story unfold and becoming aware of the layers of abuse, exploitation and neglect. In's a layered phenomena and we all need to get "smart" about it in a hurry. To those reading about my book here, I am delighted to offer you an autographed copy if you contact me directly. Thank you, Irene Masiello, author of Paradise Costs-A Victim's Daughter Fights Back against Elder Abuse.

Dear Jacqueline,
The subject of elder abuse and reducing it by training caregivers about dementia is enormously important. What a great article to inform others about this. Caregiver training is so important, in preventing abuse, and in helping the caregiver to cope with taking care of people with dementia.
Best wishes and take care,
Kristi
