The experience was highly ironic since I speak all over the country about caring for my parents who had Alzheimer's-and there I am with short-term memory loss myself! It gave me a much deeper insight and understanding of what it is like for those who begin to get dementia, and let me tell you-it is very frightening. And unlike those with dementia, my memory returned and I haven't burned any more pots-but I have gained even more compassion for those afflicted with dementia and their heart-broken families.

So if you or a loved one is experiencing senior moments, realize that they may just be part of stress and getting older-or they might be the beginning of Mild Cognitive Impairment and a precursor to Alzheimer's. By keeping track of every incident, it will be easier to notice if they increase in frequency or intensity--and hopefully motivate you to seek evaluation by a dementia specialist immediately. Remember, with early diagnosis and treatment you will be able to remain independent longer.
