My wife was diagnosed nearly four years ago and has been taking daily Reminyl/Razadyne and Namenda for virtually the entire time.  Her MMSE's have slipped from 23 to 16 over that time.  She and I have been adhering to a fairly regimented Mediterranean diet/way of eating plus regular exercise...however, she has gained significant weight and girth over this time.  I'm reduced to begin faulting her AD meds and am about to experiment with removing them for some period of time so see if there'd be any measurable change in  weight or girth.  Any others w/ this experience?

please!!! Do not take your wife off of her meds. You could greatly regret it. A study shows that patients not treated with any medications slips 2 units per month. This study was in 2007 and a measuring tool called the SIB was used. In layman's terms; a more "intelligent and clinical study" preferred in a clinical environment over the MMSE. MMSE is a doctors way of assessing the stage at which he can determine the patient is currently at. There are other drugs such as Aricept on the market. It can be taken in conjunction with Nemenda. Aricept comes in 3 different doses. 5 mg for 4-6 weeks, 10 mg for 3 months, and 23 mg thereafter. Unfortunately, AD is a debilitating disease and you want to keep her memory extended as long as possible. Please check with your doctor since I am not an MD. However, the above mentioned may be an alternative for you to strongly consider.

Thanks for your imput, Concerned Friend. I agree that a doctor should be part of these changes. Alternative approaches often have great value, as so traditional medical approaches. Hopefully, both will be considered in the case you refer to.

Best,

Carol
