Confusion - When Should Caregivers Help?

By Christine Kennard, Health Guide Tuesday, June 21, 2011
As my father got more and more ill and as his mental state deteriorated both his and our lifestyle became more restricted and limited. He was no longer able to do the things he wanted and his room became his world. We tried, when he asked, to take him out. He used a small mobile oxygen supply that he...

Your dad's story is sad, Christine. I know it hasn't been that long since his death, so this excellent article had to be hard to write, but you shared valuable information. Thank you,

Carol

Christine,

Thanks for the post about your father. I think my father-in-law's trip on May 1 for a concert will be the last one. Maybe he will still go out in a car ride offered by the home, but he can no longer enjoy outings like us anymore. We canoot take him out of the home without him coming back feeling OK physically. He either fell or had a hard time breathing after the tiring outings...

I understand the feeling that it was his last ride... At some point, the sickness just kicks in and suddenly he can no longer function like before.... He is now at fall-risk stage and will need a wheelchair in 6 months or later. He cannot walk well anymore. He is eating pureed food... He does not talk as much anymore. He also has heart failure and the nurse said he is weaker now.

Thanks for the post. It took us a year and half to figure out my FIL has Alzheimer's. The beginning of the journey was a hard one.

Regards,
Nina

As usual, this is very helpful advice, Christine.  I'm sorry about the loss of your father.  He must have been a much-loved parent and a wonderful guide to his children, given your accomplishments and your compassion.

Best wishes, CJ
