My mother who is 89 years old has had numerous UTIs in the past. I was constantly getting prescriptions for the infection and paying $80. or more for just seven pills. So, I did some searching on the internet and read where Cranberry gelcaps would help with this. Yes, she drank enough of the juice to have it help, but not disappear. She is constantly drinking lots of water each day too. I bought some cranberry gelcaps, 3000mg and I give her two gelcaps in the morning and two gelcaps in the evening and to this day she has not had any more problems with this infection. Had I found this sooner, she would not have had to endure the pain and the price of prescriptions.
Thank you Jeri but unfortunately my husbands alzheimers has gotten at the stage where he is refusing medication and the only liquid he will drink is DR pepper. The doctor says at this point any liquid is better then nothing. Of course it would be the worse thing for him to pick but it's is fluid. I would prefer juice but he refuse and won't drink anything unless he can have his Dr pepper. Your suggestion was great and I really hope it helps someone but unfortunately not an option here. Thank you Connie
Thaank you Christine.
Our home health care nurse comes out and is checking on Ray constantly. He is not better but not worse. He still has a bad cough and you can hear the fluid in his chest with out a stescope, it's that loud. She was here and questioning him about his pain and he accidentially told her he hurt. By accident I mean he keeps telling us he is in no pain. We know it isn't true his blood pressure tells us otherwise. He then said it is difficult to go to the bathroom. Accidents are becoming more frequent. He denies them but I change the bed and his clothes and I can tell when it happens. I have ask him about wearing an under germent and he flatly refuses and says he can go to the bathroom. Luckily there is a plastic cover over the hospital mattress but the smell is hard to get rid of. I don't want to humilate him any more then he already is so for now I will continually change the bed and him and do this as long as I can. He has lost so much I just hate this.
Thank you for always writing about things that at a time like this is so easy missed and is a real problem. Thank you Connie
Thanks Connie. Its great to know that my shareposts are helpful. I always enjoy reading your posts. They are helpul and supportive to so many other caregivers caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's. Thankyou to you too!!

Hi Christine
Thank you and everyone on this site. This gets harder as each day passess. I was able to get Ray out of the house yesterday and unfortunately it did not go well. He will leave the house for one reason and that is to go to our oldest granddaughters to see her and her son. Her son left last night with his biofather for 10 days for Christmas. This little guy is only 21 months old and his father is driving him to Arizona by himself and he only is in this child's life every other weekend. We tried to send all his comfort things with him but I still fear the damage this will cause this baby. He is so attached to his mother. Why dosen't the court system take that into account. He is going to his granparents that love him very much and will see he is well taken care of but even they are worried the effects this trip will have on him. On the way home about a thirty minute trip Ray went from laughing to mad to singing Bingo. The little kid dog song bingo. I don't think I will do that again I think it was to much for him and now it worries me that was the only place he would leave the house for. I am out of idea's. Help! Any suggestions?
Connie
Hi Connie, It's hard at times to really be a good caretaker. I've been taking care of my 89 year old mother for the last year now and I love doing it! She was diagnosed two years ago with dementia and it has really been hard for me, but she is doing good considering.
I read your comment about Ray's hygiene problems. I have found something that will help with the odor of urine. Try washing his clothes as well as bedding with 12 Mule Team Borax with your regular detergent. Odor disappears!
I will keep you and Ray in my prayers.
