Preventing Alzheimer’s: Exercise, Diet and Brain Games Show Promise

By Carol Bradley Bursack, Health Guide Friday, April 02, 2010
People want to know. Can we prevent Alzheimer's? Certainly, there are no guarantees. Throughout my years writing for this site, I've written about studies on exercise, diet and brain games. All have shown some promise, but none say "this will prevent Alzheimer's."   Now, a Wall Street Journal ...

Thanks for the info Carol

Even though there is a lot of conflicting information about preventing Alzheimer's specifically, keeping healthy reduces our risk factor for dementia overall. Get out that push bike, keep up gym visits! Haha

Summer always seems to make getting healthy easier. Its just hard sticking with it! :)

Thanks for the note, Christine! Maybe we should do a health challenge? Um, probably not - I'd lose. Baby steps is how I'm going at it. I was so good about my yoga - for decades -  but now find so many reasons to skip that simple stretching. I need to get more disciplined. Same with aerobics. Great post Carol. I read with interest your remarks that we should avoid saturated fats.

In past years saturated fat was once thought to be detrimental to health but it is now apparent that is the polyunsaturated fat consumption that is to blame for many ills.  Some vegetable oils, especially soy are processed with a hexane   solvent bath. Reference

And it is the omega 6 to 3 ratio that causes inflammation .

While some olive oil can be healthy it is high in omega 6 fatty acids. See my post

Extra Virgin Olive oil is great - But Don't Overdo It

Krill Oil is an excellent Omega 3 supplement but as you advise check with your doctor first.

All the best for New Year
