Hiring independent caregivers can be fraught with issues-but if you have found the exact match you need for you and your elder then the hassle can be worth it. One thing to keep in mind is that a number of software programs exist that can help you figure out the taxes/withholdings for your homecare worker. (In 2006 the tax laws stated that any home employee who made for less than $1,500/year could be considered a contractor; anything more than that and it is the employer's responsibility to take care of the taxes.) Some programs even fill out the necessary tax forms. Investing in one of these products for some might make the hassle of hiring a homecare worker who isn't affiliated with an agency worthwhile. Then you just need to have a back-up in the event that your employee needs time off.
Thanks, Lara, for this valuable advice. I'm going to check out some of that software, just to see what it does.
