Another dementia illness that is very similar to FTD is Fragile X Tremor Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS); this also affects the fronto-temporal part of the brain with symptoms very similar to what you describe for FTD. FXTAS is a genetic condition which was not even discovered by researchers until 2001. It can also cause tremors and movement disorders; if suspected, diagnosis is definitive with brain MRI and DNA testing. My husband suffers from this, and the Well Spouse Assn. has saved my sanity as FXTAS has robbed my husband of his ability to communicate, along with many other severe disabilities.
