Thanks so much for posting this, Carol! I hope it's true! I have entirely too much coffee! I do notice that my verbal acuity improves, and my memory is sharper when I do have coffee, but I'm unsure that this could easily translate to a long-term effect.
My mother, who is in the fifth stage of Alzheimer's and in her early 90s, always had a pot of coffee on the stove (her generation favored percolators when I was a child). In general, her mental capacities lasted more deeply into her elder years, compared to my father, who died of vascular dementia in his early 80s.
Of course, there will be someone out there to nay-say these findings, I imagine. In the meantime, I'll sip my morning joe with the self-satisfied benefit of believing, at least for a few days, that I'm doing myself some good!
Keep your great posts coming!
Thanks, CJ! I'm going for this study for all it's worth : ) Actually, there has been quite a bit of information pointing to coffee as a very good "health food." One study I read said there are more anti-oxidants escaping in the steam of your hot coffee than in an orange. Not sure if that's true, but I like that study. Antioxidants have been proven to be important to our overall health.
I hope researchers discover the component of coffee that works with caffeine to protect the brain. If they do, it may help in drug research, as well. Meanwhile, we'll have a virtual "coffee meeting." I'm sipping on mine right now.
Thanks for your kind words! I try to keep us all updated.
Blessings,
Carol
