"Could it be Dementia?" looks at nutrition and how nutrients are absorbed, noting the importance of B12 for elders, which was discussed on this site in the article titled "Vitamin B12, Prevagen and Other Natural Approaches to Alzheimer's Prevention."
Morse goes deep into some fascinating new tests that can detect Alzheimer's far earlier than once thought. Some are high-tech and some are low-tech verbal tests. The idea is to try to catch Alzheimer's early, to start treatment.
I found it interesting that Morse compares the reluctance of many doctors, and even some family members, to tell a person he or she is suffering from Alzheimer's to that of the reluctance, in decades past, to tell someone he or she had cancer. When nothing could be done about cancer, people often thought ignorance was bliss. Now, early detection is the main key to recovery from cancer. However, since we can't yet cure Alzheimer's, some of that thinking has migrated from cancer to Alzheimer's. Is it good for them to know or will they be too depressed to cope?
"Could it be Dementia?" is delectably readable, well organized and packed with interesting information. Morse's religious faith is strong and sincere. She shares touching stories of elders and their courage, strength and pain. She gives practical advice about caregiving. Certainly, Christian churches should own this book, however I will once more say that nearly anyone interested in dementia and Alzheimer's disease will gain a great deal by reading it.
