Same thing here - 10 years from diagnosis to death for my mom with dementia. 8+ years institutionalized, most of that time requiring intermediate nursing-level care. The only reason we didn't go bankrupt was that I moved her to a private geriatric clinic in Mexico. It offered 2x the caregivers for 1/2 of the price here in the U.S. Many people should take that option, but few will.

That's an interesting option, Bill. I'm sure many wouldn't consider it for several reasons, one of which is that the elder wouldn't be near friends and relatives. Location would matter.
