attitude
N.C.
Friday, August 01, 2008 at 12:01 PMCarol, lately I have seen many news on AD drugs. Like you said, it is natural that the family want to try the drugs even if it is in trial.
One thing I am still really pissed off is that some doctors seem to still tell patients that it is dementia and just tell them to go home and not telling you any more details.
Even my FIL's home care nurse has never bothered to tell me the functional stages and etc. I think she is keeping it as her own skill so her clients are not supposed to know or something unless we push for the answers.
The other thing is, like my nephew who is a new doctor as GP, he still thinks the AD drugs are not so good (at best to change the behaviors as he put it.) He talks about the drugs like try it.
It is like even the professionals don't even know how serious this is for the families. Just like cancer, people try all alternatives to cure cancer but no one bothers to deal with dementia! My FIL's GP was reluctant for giving him AD drugs. At first it was called depression. Until my FIL went for the memory test, no one said or gave him the drugs for AD but his friend suspected it.
What is wrong with these professionals? It is not textbooks! It is real cases!!
I think people, both professionals and families need more understanging and awareness! Most people seem to think dementia is part of aging and they said oh it is the way it is!
Would you say the same thing about cancer???Nina

Friday, August 01, 2008 at 12:07 PMYou said a bunch, Nina! One Alzheimer's specialist, who sadly died from cancer awhile back, knew what it was all about. He said,"We doctors diganose and you caregivers get the rest."
He, however, did his best to help the person with Alzheimer's live a quality life and help the caregivers as best he could. He should have been cloned, as I hear stories like yours all the time. I hope medical schools gear up their training so that new doctors are better prepared to deal with dementia.
Take care,
Carol

Thanks for your posting of this research information Carol. It hits the nail on the head on how alot of people are probably feeling about research and its findings and how long things can take sometimes.
I wonder how much politics and money play a role in all of this. I suspect uite a bit. Maybe our election this November will help move things ahead a bit quicker. Change is usually a good thing!
All the best , sue
