Counseling and Dementia: Part One

By Leah, Health Guide Monday, April 19, 2010
Anyone who has followed my blogs knows that, even with dementia, I continue to push the envelope where my life is concerned. I am determined to live every lucid moment I have to its fullest. With that in mind, I have decided to embark on a new journey of self-discovery. "Inside myself is a place...

Hi Leah,  You continue to impress me!  I hope that you can find the help that you are seeking.  You probably have a lot of well managed depression bottled up inside yourself.  Writing has been a good outlet and you've done an exceptional job of it.  Thank you for letting us make the journey along with you, as you share each of these experiences.  The double whammy of diabetes and dementia is totally unfair.  Despite this, you have carried on and shared your story with a clear intention of helping us to understand.  I hope that we have been good listeners and given you back some reciprocal support.  Your posts serve as an inspiration to all of us.  ("When the going gets tough, the tough get going" - Knute Rockne?)  Counseling may be very helpful to you.  You should take an audio recorder with you to the sessions if that's allowed.  These aren't very expensive and the information recorded may be more beneficial if you can hear it repeatedly.  Memory trouble is a real disadvantage, so this may be a helpful tool.  As always, I wish you the best!  Keep in touch with us!  --  Joe  --

Once again, Joseph, I enjoy hearing from you.  It's readers like you and Carol and so many others (their names elude me at the moment--short term memory loss, ya know! LOL) who keep me charged up and running onward.  The idea of a recorder is an excellent idea!  I'll continue to keep you posted.

Blessings to you,

Leah

You are a leader, Leah! Keep leading. This is wonderful news and we look forward to your updates.

I do think that counseling has been ignored too long. People with dementia, who are willing, would be ideal candidates, I would think, as long as the memory they maintain allows them to make progress.

Thanks so much for being you.

Hi, Carol!  It certainly does help to have a cause to bring one out of the slumps!  lol     I look forward to both researching into dementia and counseling and to being part of counseling myself.  And, just as important, will be my job to get the information out to you and all the others who join us on ouralzheimers.com!  God bless you, my friend!

I am so glad I ran across your article - I am the daughter of a person with early dementia - and I wish I knew how to help her - there are times she believes she is in another room that has been made to look like hers - I have talked with the RN - Social Worker etc wishing I could find an easy way to draw her back into reality - I will try to find the article you mentioned and go from there - thank you for the posting!

Leah's sharepost are very valuable to us all. It is great to get insights so that it can help us understand what it feels like to have a dementia such as Alzheimer's.

I wrote these shareposts that you may find helpful in your caregiving.

I'm glad that you found my posting to be helpful.  You are honoring your mother in so many ways by both caring for her and seeking ways to understand her at this stage in her life.  If you peruse the other experts on ouralzheimers.com, I know you can find the support you are seeking.  You may want to sign up for one or two of your most favorite experts, so that you receive their blogs each time they are posted.

Your mom is probably beyond the need for counseling, but perhaps you may consider it yourself now.  It is so very important that you take care of yourself and take time FOR yourself in order to not burn out.

My best wishes to you.  I hope to hear from you again in the future.

Hi Leah Smile I stumbled across your page yesterday and was so very excited. My name's Tracey. I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. I've worked in residential aged care for over 10years and during that time studied caring, nursing, psychology and now counselling. I want so desperatly to open up positions within nursing homes where counsellors can provide emotional support to people such as yourself. Like you I am finding limited opportunities which continues to take me on my own wonderfully challenging journey. I am inspired by your words and I would be privelaged to follow your amazing journey. I'm wondering is this link 'Health Central' your blog? I look forward to some discussions with keen interest.

Blessings Smile

You are an amazing woman!!!! God bless you. But on your post, I would just like to share that where I worked had astonishing relationships with our dementia families and educated them to the highest level. Our doctors are amazing too! The staff included. You're completely correct. The data is very hard to find. We have a place here where I live called Memory Care, Dr. Tempelton resides over that program and is awesome too. Also, check out Teepasnow.com, she is awesome! I've seen her in person and in realtime action though we deal with alot of opposition and aggressions. But you can email her yourself. She is very passionate about dementia. Hope this can link all to other options, take care.

I love being given helpful information, Angie.  Thank you!  I am sure there ARE some compassionate places where the patients are treated well and encouraged to be all they can be.  I hope there will be one close when and if I need one in the future.  I will look into the sites you quoted.

May God be with you, Angie!

Always,

Leah
