Living with Dementia: Using Social Media to Cope with Dementia

By Leah, Health Guide Thursday, August 05, 2010
I love Facebook! Many people, I know, will not agree with me. My sister is one. However, I theorize that these people, these naysayers, have not actually USED Facebook. They, instead, rely on news reportings detailing the problems that Facebook can cause: lack of privacy, etc. I want to relate t...

Hi Leah,

I know that some computers are more user friendly than others, and I hope that type of technolgy continues to grow. So many people in the over 55 group are afraid of computers, even if they don't have dementia. So, learning it with dementia would be very hard. You are right that if people can - social media is a great route to go. I see other names on Facebook that I recognize as people with dementia. They are playing games and having a good time.

Yes, Carol, my suggestion is good only for those of us with dementia who know how to use the computer.  I strongly urge those without dementia and over 55 to try to learn how to use a computer.  Keep a journal on it using Word.  Use emails to keep in touch with your friends--but DON"T just send jokes like so many over 55 seem to do.  Google brain games, make crossword puzzles for friends to solve using free programs; I am making one for our family reunion...

Leah,

It is great that you can use the social media for a good time!

Some people like my father-in-law could no longer work on the computer back in 2007 or now. He could not even type properly without frustration. He even asked my husband "what does this computer generate?"

It is sad for him because he used to use the computer to type his papers (the old style like Pentium kind of PC.) He could even email using the old laptop in early 2000 (up to mid-2004.) I guess this is about staging.

Enjoy the social media while you still can! Glad to hear that!

Take care,

Nina

When I wrote the blog, unfortunately I wasn't thinking deeply enough to factor in those with dementia who have reached more advanced stages.  I had in mind those like Sandy, one of my readers, who is functioning pretty highly also.  It is so sad when those we love can no longer handle what was once easy.  I appear so normal...and write pretty well...but my mind is often mush.  I have to have ads explained to me...plots explained...and I can no longer think through a complete process.  Had I been able to do the latter, I would have made mention in my blog that it was directed mainly to the more highly functioning.  Thank you for your comments.  I do hope that I have helped you in previous blogs.  God bless you for all you are doing!

I believe that using FB helps keep the physical brain from deteriorating even faster. Learning FB and it's uses as well as using language skills, computer skills, everything needed to use FB should also protect brain cells and maybe even make new connections in the brain to keep it working.

Keep communicating!

Many thanks, Maris, for commenting.  I hear so much on the news about the cons of FB; I wish one of the stations would do an article with the "pros".  Hope to hear from you again!

I agree, Leah. The "cons" are more sensational so get news attention. There is a lot of good in social media for elders who want to keep up computer skills and/or find a second way to socialize.

Since I spend most of my time at home due to MS, I spend a lot of it communicating via email, fb, forums. In addition, I read lots of articles, usually connected to health and science, and play a game that I've become almost addicted to Wink. I'm usually pretty easy to find around here.

Be well and see you around,

Maris
