A string of new research suggests that exposure to lead early in life could lead to more significant mental decline later in life, says The Washington Post.

Studies show that lead exposure, even if it was in a person's childhood, could result in a person's brain operating 5 years older than it really is. Dr. Philip Landrigan of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine says that it makes sense that if brain cells are destroyed early in life, the brain will cope later in life by drawing on the brain's reserve capacity.
