Q: LTC nurse needs help engaging a wanderer and "organizer"

I work as an LPN in a nursing home that has a mix of long term care residents. We have a new resident that is constantly into things-med cart, other residents rooms, treatment cart, refrigerator, Just constantly "touching" things. She has to organize and push people's w/c around. We have 50+ other residents to look after and care for...we are beside ourselves. She is attempting to drink things and we are very very concerned. We have to hide things and it doesn't make our job easy. She almost pulled the fire alarm the other day. She also almost pushed a Hoyer lift into another residents head.

How can we keep her engaged without having to be by her side every minute? We had her folding washclothes for a while, but that isn't working anymore.

HELP!!!!

This is tough. She is anxious, I say. I'm sure you've seen this before with Alzheimer's, but she may be more extreme. You are right to try to engage her with activities, but a doctor may be able to prescribe an anti-anxiety medication, if she feels anxiety is the root cause. Do you have an Alzheimer's unit? It sounds like this is a general population. You maybe need to talk with her family about an Alzheimer's specific facility or unit.

You don't want her to get hurt and you don't want her hurting others. This could happen, as you try to care for so many. The doctor and the family will be your best choices here. Good luck with a hard situation.
