Q: Are there any care giver classes or seminars I could attend to learn how to care for my parents?

Hello everyone,

My mum has alzheimer's and my dad is starting to exhibit some characteristics.  I'm interested in learning how to care for them.   I do not want to put them in a home as they are not at that stage.  However, I do want to learn how to care for them.  If anyone knows of any courses and how I could sign up I would be grateful.

Thank you all and have a nice day.Laughing

Regards

Ruth

It is admirable you want to provide the best care for your parents.  Becoming educated on the proper management for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease is important in order to provide the best quality of life.   It is imperative to be knowledgeable and prepared for what may come on a daily basis but also over the long term.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America has several ways to educate and train on how to properly care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses.  AFA’s “Your Time to Care” DVD series is designed to educate caregivers on caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias in the home setting. Using a step-by-step process, the DVD entitled "Your Time to Care" provides a thorough foundation and hands-on skills, including information about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, principles of personal care, behavioral management, and safe home care. “Your Time to Care” will not only help you gain a greater understanding of this illness, but will teach you to effectively and confidently manage it as well. Other titles in the series are "Preventing Wandering" and "Medication Management." These DVDs are available for purchase by contacting the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America at 866-232-8484 or online at AFA's estore--www.alzfdn.org.

There is an array of insightful books on the market that can help to guide families through these steps of preparation and learning.  In addition, AFA offers a free magazine for caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses.  The magazine articles cover dementia-specific issues and help inform caregivers in order to inspire them to offer the best in care.  Written in a reader-friendly style, it is uniquely designed to specifically provide a new vantage point to dementia caregivers. Each issue presents articles that offer valuable information and insight into a wide range of timely topics, from the medical and practical to the emotional and inspirational. Articles are written by top experts in their respective fields.  This magazine may help answer some critical questions you may have as a caregiver.  For more information you can visit www.afacareadvantage.org.

Hi, I myself have not taken anything caregiving courses as I don't do it personally  for my FIL. However, according to my FIL's professional caregivers who all took this caregiving classes for nursing aid  certificate, they told me one can just go to the junior college that offers caregiving or nursing aid courses. You can either just take some classes, or take all 10 classes to get the certificate as CNA.

Hope this helps.

I also find it helpful to read all the posts/answers in this support group. Many experts or members have very good advices here.

Take care,

Nina
