For some people it helps. Doctors often try different drugs as many dementias are "mixed" in that they may be FTD and some Alzheimer's or some vascular. Dementia types aren't as clear cut as they once were thought. If you have confidence in the doctor, I'd go along with his or her recommendations, carefully monitoring the person for negative side effects. If you don't have confidence in the doctor, or are just plain curious, try for a second medical opinion.
