Q: Which tracking device is recommended for alzheimer's?

My husband has alzheimer's, and he needs to continue doing his walks. Without using a GPS tracking device (bracelet, watch, ...) I don't feel peace of mind. Please give me your advice.

There are multiple tracking devices on the market. It's important to consider whether or not the locating device is appropriate for someone with Alzheimer's disease. For example, is it user activated? if so that could pose an issue since the person may not be capable of understanding the need to push a button. Is it hand-held or worn on the body? If hand-held, will the person remember to take it with him/her? You also want a device that will not only help safeguard the individual, but will offer peace of mind to caregivers. Among the newest on the market,  the Alzheimer's Foundation of America is marketing a new locator device specifically designed for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias who may wander. Called "Breadcrumb," it is a small device strapped to the individual around the ankle, and it uses a cellular system to pinpoint the precise location of a participant who wanders outside of a designated geographic area.. The device regularly reports the person's location to the Breadcrumb call center around the clock, and pre-identified caregivers are notified via text message and/or phone call when the person leaves a designated geographic field. To learn more about this device, please visit our website www.alzfdn.org or contact  the social services department at 866-232-8484. Differently, Project Lifesaver International markets a locator device, which uses radio frequency to locate an individual. It works in cooperation with law enforcement agencies, which have companion equipment to track an individual who has gone missing.
