This is dementia caused by "mini-strokes" or bleeding in the brain. These strokes can go unnoticed by the person having them, or they can cause weakness and/or confusion and other semi-mild symptoms. But when a person has many, they can cause dementia. They also put a person at higher risk of a major stroke.

Christy...multi-infarct dementia is a form of vascular dementia. Symptoms develop in a stepwise manner.  Although everyone is  not the same, these can be some symptoms. Confusion..problems with recent memory..problems with planning, organization and memory...laughing or crying inappropriately.problem finding words and substituting other words. These are just a few symptoms. It is best to go to a neurologist. These days you probably will need a referral so talk to your family physician about your concerns and be adamant about your concerns. There are many websites that explain what multi-infarct dementia one is National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke . ( ninds.nih.gov). Do not feel alone in your situation. There are w onderful sites like this one. I am not a physician but am living with multi-infarct dementia. I hope this has helped.
