How can you tell if someone is in early Alzheimer's

My father in law has recently had some disoriented spells and some unusal emotions. I was wondering should we have him be seen by a doctor? or could he have had a mild stroke? he had no headaches or any pain, he does remember some of the episode, like being lost and not knowing where he was. I...
