Alzheimer's

My husband has Alzheimer's disease, about stage 5. He still likes to drink Alcohol. I manage how much he drinks. He likes to drink Cognac straight however, I have been diluting it with water, half and half. But still even with that he drinks about 10 ozs per day of the diluted alcohol. My question is: he is taking trazadone for his aggression and mood swing and I was wondering if I should wean him off the alcohol altogether? But when I try and wean him off he gets very angry with me. What should I do?

Hi, Lillian,

If I were in your shoes, I'd call your husband's doctor and see what he or she suggests. I know that my mother enjoyed drinking wine most nights. Like you, I started managing Mom's drinking because she became mean after two glasses of wine. I also was worried about the interaction between her alcohol consumption and her multiple medications. Shortly thereafter, she was placed in a nursing home, so I no longer had to monitor her drinking and didn't have to have this discussion with her doctor.

Take care!
