I would like some advice on how to get my mother to take her pills. Here lately she gets very emotional and will not  take them , I would like some advice on what to do in this matter. When she can take them it is ok and it can go well , but these days are harder for her and I would like to hear your advice. Thanks Again for everything. Rose Mary

Hi, Rose Mary,

My mom also would often refuse pills and medications. What seemed to work for both me as well as the nursing home nurses was to leave for awhile (thus causing Mom to forget about the request and to get into a better mood). Then we'd come back 15 to 30 minutes later with the same request for Mom to take her medications. This often worked.

I also found that when Mom was obstinate, I could mention her favorite doctor's name and say that these pills were prescribed by him and she would normally take the pills.

I hope this helps! Take care and stay in touch.

Rosemary, My Mother loves sweets. I put a pill in a bite of Chocolate Cake or something nutty. I put the bite on the fork and say here try this. At first I felt bad about this. But, I can only sleep if she sleeps and does not wander at night. It has worked so far. beth
