Q: My father was on the anxiety drug Ativan for over 2 years.

He was diagnosed with dementia a year ago last month.  His dementia has progressed rapidly in this past year.  I believe that the Ativan caused his dementia.  At this point he is thoroughly out of control.  We had to have him hospitalized in a psychiatric unit to detox him from Ativan, Seroquel and Depakote.  The last two drugs have only been prescribed since Feb. this year.  He was having periods of extreme agitation and aggressiveness that led to his hospitalization.  He was released last Friday after spending 8 days in the psychiatric unit.  His verbal abuse and threatening of harm to my mother has increased ten fold.  The slightest thing agitates him.  For the past few days I have spent 8 plus hours at there house making sure he gets his proper meds and that he eats.  My mother is overwhelmed and too upset to do these things for him anymore.  There are some family issues that have caused this situation to spiral out of control.  At this point I truly believe that a nursing home is no longer just an option it is imperative.  My last question posted here was in February and I am thankful for the feedback I received.  Any feedback on this current situation will be appreciated.

Hi Monica,

You are absolutely right. This is not good, nor safe, for your mother or even you. Drug interactions and reactions can cause extreme changes in personality.  Professional help and getting him into a safe environment for the sake of everyone, including him, is vital. Please keep in touch with us and let us know how your are doing.

Hi Monica,

I am sorry that your Dad has dementia and is very sick now. It seems it is progressing fast. I think a nursing home for dementia is important so that your mother can be safe alone. Please note that you can select a home that is specialized for dementia so the caregivers know how to treat him. Sometimes it takes some tricks to calm down the patient after he gets out of the hospital. e.g., we can no longer disagree with him and argue with him. One has to comply with him or say white lies and etc so as to make sure everything is ok with him. I don't know what stage he has - moderate stage or severe stage? Sometimes when he gets too psychotic, it may look like the end stage.

Anyway, hope you will find a good nursing home for dementia. Please keep us posted!

Take care,

Nina
