Q: Early Onset Alzheimer's 58 single financial assistance

Looking for any one with knowledge through the world of financial assistance.  2 wks ago today, my x husband ended up on my doorstep.  Have had minimal contact in the 8 yrs since the divorce.  AFter a brief visit, it was clear he needed a medical evaluation.  It appears he is in the moderate stage already.  We have found out he has had 7 jobs in the last 15 months and can not write a check and add and subtract, run a gas card at the pump.  This man has always worked hard and made a good income.  But to say he has the finances to take care of early onset alzheimer's, is not the case.  He is a vet from the viet nam war, and we are trying to contact ssi.  Does anyone know how fast we can get the financial assistance we will need to take care of him properly?  Looking for short cuts and wonder if there are any.  thank you

Unfortunately, with government red-tape, shortcuts are few. Try to talk to a real person, not just at the hospital, but with veteran's rights folks. Your county adult services can give you advice, too. They often work directly with veteran's rights people.

You also may find an estate attorney helpful, in this case. Sometimes they can get through faster than we can. Be sure it 's the right kind though - an attorney who routinely handles the affairs of people with dementia or the aging population, in general. I'd recommend trying that route. You've got your hands full, for sure. Carol

Hi Mary, Thanks for your question.

As Carol said, you have your hands full.  But maybe you help to work this out. I assume you are working through the Department of Veterans Affairs and yes indeed there can be red tape involved there.  Maybe there is a local group of one of the national organizations who can help you as well.  Some of them even have 24/7 toll free hotlines which might put you in the right direction.

Also, at somepoint you will need support for yourself.  See out Caregiver Center for tips and the basics for getting what you need in order to help your ex-husband.

All the best, sue
