Wednesday, September 17, 2008 KP asks

Q: My brother-in-law is 53 and has probable early-onset alzheimer's.

He is deteriorating rather fast and will soon require some form of daily help.  He is divorced, cannot work and has no money, but does have some form of health insurance.  We are having trouble finding an appropriate, affordable living situation for him.

Can you provide any advice or resource information to help us?

Hi, KP,

You might check and see if there is a state, regional or local Council on Aging (or Department of Aging) for where you live. I know that Texas (where I live) has both a state Department of Aging as well as regional councils. These types of organizations may prove to be a starting point for you.

Take care and keep in touch!

Dear Kp: You could either place him in a day care centre near you, so that other care givers attend work/duties. It appears that you can not afford a caregiver/find a Psychiatrist/Neurologist and act on their advice. Long term institutionalization by and large is counter productive as per results in different studies. Thank you.
