6 Questions

Hello, my name is Bethany Vawter. I am doing a genetics project for Biology 2 Honors about Alzheimer's and I would like to ask a few questions. This project means a lot to me because my grandmother was just diagnosed with the disease.

1. Is there anyway to prevent Alzheimer's?

2. My grandmother seems to be the only one in my family tree with the disease. How is that possible when Alzheimer's is a dominant disorder?

3. How can someone tell the difference between dimentia and Alzheimer's?

4. Is there a known reason for the onset of Alzheimer's? (What goes wrong in the brain?)

5. How can I find out what the risk is of me inheriting the disease?

6.Is there a way to slow down the disease?

I think that is all of my questions. Thank you very much for taking the time to look at them!

Hi Bethany:  Thanks for using our site as a reference for your project.  I will try and show you the material I think will help you to find the answers you need for your project.

First, you should read our Understanding Alzheimer's section that covers everything about this disease.  We also have a Prevention area on the site that should provide what you need in to answer that question.

You also ask about the causes of the disease - check out this link provided.

There is a great deal of information in our Caregiver Center - you may find it useful.

You can read what one of our experts writes about the differences between dementia and Alzheimer's. As well, many of Our Experts, may have written about what you are researching - you can review here (hint: try using our search function to narrow down the list).

Hope this helps - good luck!

All the best, sue (moderator)

I can't add much to what Sue wrote except to point out my last couple of posts about a new drug study on  antioxidants , which may even reverse Alzheimer's. I know that I'm doing the things I mentioned in this post.

You are smart to start to look for answers early.

Best,

Carol
