Q: My mom is only 38 and acts as if she has alzheimer's. Is that possible? What can I do to help?

She woke up from a nap and forgot who my sister and I were and told us she didn't have any children. About fifteen minutes after we woke her up she started to remember who we all were. She was in a time set of when she was sixteen and thought her mom was coming back to get her. She didn't think she was in her own home. She has been acting like this for about two weeks. Are there things that I can do to help comfort her or help?

Hi Jades mommy

There are many possible causes for your Mom's apparent loss of memory. She is very young for her symptoms to be Alzheimer's, so it is very important you get her to a doctor as quickly as possible. Her symptoms do sound serious and could be a sign of a disease that may be life threatening.

I am not sure how old you are so I think it is also important you talk to a close family member to support you on this. Get your mom to a doctor and get a diagnosis before you think about how else you can help and support her.

Keep in touch,

Christine

If your mom takes any medications, she should have her doctor look into that. Also, an infection could cause this disorientation.  She does sound young to be experiencing dementia symptoms. However, early on-set Alzheimer's disease can start young. I agree with Christine that you may want to talk to a family friend or another older person about this. Your mom may need some help, regardless of what is wrong. You are right to be concerned.

Please do let us know how you are doing.
