Wander no more? Please help me, my father has a propensity to wonder! where do I go from here?
My father has a propensity to wander. He is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's.?He still has his drivers license, and last week, he disappeared. We were extremely worried to say the least. The police were notified and a search was initiated.Thank G-d he was located in the next County five hours later. He was a little confused and lost, but the police were able to escort him home.
I did some research on the Internet , and I discovered a company called (family protect).
Their web site is called (familyprotect.US )They had some reasonably priced satellite tracking of equipment.I purchased device that looks like a pager. When placed in his jacket pocket,we can Follow his every movement via the Internet on our computer.I went to our local police station and gave them access to the software as well.
To our amazement , the personal tracker worked beautifully. Now when he goes out for a little walk in Central Park, we can follow his movements, and alleviate quite a bit of our concern and worry's.
I went to the Alzheimer's Association of America in New York City. They were not familiar with these type of devices and were quite excited about the technology. Although the price could be prohibitive. Why don't more people know about this technology? And if cost is an issue, arent there programs like silver alert, or grants available for people in the early stages of Alzheimer's with a propensity to wander? Could a device like this be prescribed by the visiting nurse service of New York?We were able to obtain a hospital bed,a walker, and some bathroom safety equipment for my father, paid completely by Medicare. Is wondering a diagnosable stage of Alzheimer's? Is it recognized as a specific stage of the illness? I would certainly like to pursue caregivers, and various associations,and/or doctors to tell them of the success of this device, and the technology being used successfully by my family.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can go about promoting these devices?
I can see where it can be a tremendous tool for many people in the same situation that we are in.
I know that this is a degenerative disease and we are being realistic about my father's future. But for this time in our lives,I love the fact that my father still has a little bit of freedom. We do not have to incarcerate him for fear of him getting lost.I know that we will have to take the vehicle away from him within the next few weeks. And I can only hope for as long as it lasts he will still be able to take his strolls in the park. And unbeknownst to him, we willin be watching.Yet not freaking out anymore.
Glad your father was located.
