what are some simple strategies that could be used to alleviate pain
First of all, the doctor needs to find out where the pain is coming from and what type of pain it is. Most Alzheimer's patients can take medication for arthritis, etc. with their Alzheimer's medication.
The problem with many pain strategies (non-drug) is that they take some cooperation and understanding on the part of the person in pain. Heating pads, for instance, can give great releif, however someone with Alzheimer's may not be able to articulate that it is too hot. Same with ice. If it's cold, they may move away. Is it too cold or do they just not understand that a few minutes with an ice pack may help? Getting the person to move, at least, can help. Sitting for hours stiffens joints and causes pain.
So much alternative pain relief depends on the brain that it becomes more difficult to use these with dementia patients.
I would, however, talk with the doctor about alternatives to drugs. He or she will know the stage of the Alzheimer's disease and have a better idea of what can be done.
Take care,
Carol
