Q: I have been a pretty good typist for most of my life. Now I have started typing words incorrectly,

random misspellings, double words, etc.  I am an elementary school principal, female, 59 years old.  Two of my father's sisters had AD.  Is this deterioration of my typing an early sign of Alzheimers?

This is what you want to look for. I am a lousy typist, but I've always been so (bless computers). You were excellent at this skill and you see a change. This, along with the family history of AD, makes me think it would be wise to a doctor.

This one thing does not mean you are developing the disease, but a change in something you were once good at does indicated a problem. It could be a medication you are taking or stress. But it could be more. Please see a doctor and tell her about this particular issue, plus your family history. Be vigilant. If the doctor says "no problem", continue to monitor yourself and if you are worried see a different doctor, preferably a specialist on aging and dementia.

You are wise to be alert. Take care,

Carol

Hi, Lsantillan,

Thank you for your question. I agree with Carol that you should see your doctor to see if there might be dementia.

I also wonder if your issues with typing may be due to menopause as well as to the stress of being a principal (which, in my experience, means that one does a lot of multi-tasking daily). I've heard that as women age, they often become less efficient in multi-tasking (which may be the reason for your errors). Seeing the doctor and getting his/her feedback will help you determine if something is going on. If there's not a health issue, then you can determine if lifestyle changes may result in a return to the level that you once had.

Take care and keep us posted!
