Q: How do you know what stage of Alzheimer's someone is in?

What are the stages of Alzheimer's. My mother in law takes Aricept and Namenda. She has lived with us for two years and the Doctor hasn't mentioned what stage she's in. I should say she is pysically very healthy, 88yrs. old and has no short term memory, talks very little ans sleeps much of the day.

There are 7 stages. In general family doctors or nurses don't bother to tell the patient or family about the staging. However, there are 7 stages in details in this website below:

http://www.alzinfo.org/clinical-stages-of-alzheimers-disease.asp#3

#3 is stage 3 and etc. My own experience with my father-in-law is that you have to check this out yourself by seeing how she behaves everyday. A doctor cannot really tell it as he/she does not live wth her. Also the psychiatrist may have tests to evaluate the level of the memory loss and determine if it is moderate or severe stages. (There are 3 general stages: early, moderate and severe.) Stage 5-7 is severe. stage 4-5 is moderate.

Sometimes I wonder maybe the health care professionals don't bother to tell us. e.g., our home care nurse knows but does not really tell me the specifics. I know that my FIL is in stage 6. I checked with his nurse aid and she verified that. Also the psychiatrist underestimated his staging back in Oct., 2006.

Hope this helps,

Nina
