My daughters ex mother and law and I are great friends.  The past several months I have noticed many changes in her.  She cant even write a check now, and comes to me for help with this.  She cant express herself verbally, and I have to guess what she is trying to tell me.  She has NO insurance.  She lives pay day to pay day.  I dont know if I should ask her if anyone has alzheimers in her family or not.  I know she is afraid. She works in assembly.  She lives in Pinellas County, Fl.  She is aware she has a problem big time.  Any suggestions?  I wish I had money to take her to the doctors but I dont.  Im very concerned about her.

You are a good friend. This poor woman's situation points out the holes in our medical care. She should be able to see a doctor.

Do you know any of her family well enough to talk with them. They should be the ones to step in. If you are really close and you feel it is best, let her know that you understand her fear. She is likely afraid she will lose her job, but she will anyway, if she can't do it. Maybe you can help her by getting her permission and going with her to see the social services in her county. Or you could go on the Florida state web site and look for services. There should be a phone number under aging services. If you can talk with someone in Florida about what is available there, you may be able to start the ball rolling.

Good luck with this.

Carol
