Placement into a long term facility requires following certain steps.  If you are seeking skilled nursing care your husband will require certain medical assessments to qualify him.  Each facility has admission requirements that include medical and financial components.  You would need to speak to the admissions department in order to get the needed information.   In determining if your husband would be eligible for the veterans home you would have to reach out to the facility’s admissions department.  Some facilities will have eligibility requirements as determined by the state for long-term placement.  You should contact the US Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Administration at 1-800-827-1000 or https://iris.va.gov.  You can also inquire with your local VA facility about alternate facilities that may have a contract for veterans.    You may also look for a unit that specializes in Alzheimer’s care.  Some facilities will have a wing or unit designated for dementia care.  Typically, there is more focus on cognitive stimulation and recreational activities.  A dementia unit could also be beneficial as the staff usually will have a good deal of training and also provide supervision daily.
