Q: Is it common for a Parkinson/dementia patient to decline so quickly?

My dad was just diagnosed with dementia in Feb.of this year. He is also a Parkinson patient for 17 years. He was placed in a nursing home middle Feb. somewhat coherent and lucid. His acting differently started in Nov. of last year. So it's only been six months and has had such a rapid decline in the last three. He still has his vocals but does not make sense of things and could not hold a conversation. Is confused going to the bathroom, needs a depends. He now has trouble eating with a fork and uses his hands now. He still recognizes us thank God. He has been in a psychiatric unit for week because of his irrational and argumentative behavior. He is now having electrotherapy treatment. I believe that is what it's called. So my question is this a late stage dementia? And why has it declined so quickly? Most appreciative

Hi Sally

I am so sorry that you are all going through such a hard time. It sounds very distressing for all of you. It is very difficult to make any judgement on your father’s stage and progress. I guess he is having ECT because the doctors believe he may be depressed and that his speedy decline may be, in part due to that?

I would go back and talk to his medical team. They will be able to tell you more. Stages of dementia are guidelines and there are some individual differences.

All my best wishes to you, your father and your family. Your visits and support will mean a lot to your father I am sure

Christine
