Q: stepmother thinks everyone is doing things to her

My stepmother has bipolar. My father died 3 years ago due to her decision to pull the plug. She now blames herself for his death. She had a bad nervous breakdown 1 year ago and about 2 years ago started saying people were taking things from her or moving them somewhere that she can't find them. But now it is really bad she gets very angry and thinks things are happening all the time. none of here biological children can deal with her they tell her she is crazy and needs help. So they don't even let her live with them which I think is really making her worse. Please can you help.

Hi Irene,

It's sad that her biological children won't help.

The woman likely needs medication combined with counseling. She isn't going to get better on her own, and she could harm herself, or even someone else, if she isn't treated.

If you go to www.nami.org (National Alliance on Mental Illness), you will be able to find the contact information for a person near you, including an email address, who can advise you on your next step. I'd suggest that you contact these local people and ask what you can do to help her.

Good luck, Irene. This is very tough. You are a kind person to hang in and want to help. Please let us know how it goes.

Carol
