Wednesday, July 01, 2009 BGCleveland asks

Q: My 87 year old Mom with Alzheimer's is coming to live with me. I want a hospital bed. Advice?

I am carsick from looking at all the online hospital bed sites.

I can't wait for Medicare for this as I am taking over responsibility for Mom, and bringing her to my home (1000 miles on an Amtrak bedoom car) in less than two weeks). Another family memeber has kept Mom at Mom's home since her diagnosis 4 years go - but there is a family emergency so we are 'shifting' her care here.

Any suggestions/advice on the mattress I need, who to buy or rent from, etc. would be appreciated. I am in Frederick, Maryland (just outside metro DC).

Thanks

Hi, BGCleveland,

I know how difficult this is. I didn't have to get a hospital bed for Mom since she almost immediately went to live in a nursing home. My best suggestion for you is to contact a medical supply store in your area to determine what your mother needs.

Take care and keep us posted!

One more thought - what type of bedding did your mother have where she previously was at? You might want to find out from that family member so you can learn whether that worked best for your mom or whether you need something different.

Dorian Thank you for taking the time to answer my query!  I truly appreciate your input.

I ordered a semi-electric bed from Vitality Medical on Saturday. They had the most 'user-friendly' site, as well as being a member of the BBB and offering free shipping. And nice! Someone called today to ask if I had any additional questions - and to make sure I had placed the order!  (I like that). i paid less than $900 for the bed, mattress, and half rails - pretty much the going price it seems for a basic bed.

Mom has been living in the same house since 1949, and while the mattrress she has been on is not quite that old,  the mattress I ordered for her (the top of the line innerspring with a foam memory topper) will surely be an improvement.

Everything else is on order from Allegro Medical (they are having a July 4the 20% off sale through midnight) and then i made a WalMart run for all the 'little' things she will need.

Oh - I also bought some a "Big Band' era CD, as well as one of old-timey hymns. I've discovered one of the few things Mom still remembers/seems to enjoys is when I read the Bible to her (although in my lifetime she never once went to church). But she did as a child, and this she remembers.

Thanks again for the support.

Hi, Barbara,

I'm so glad that you've figured out next steps for your mom (including purchasing the CD). And again, I apologize for the delay in getting back to you on your question. Please let us know if you have any additional questions as you take over caregiving for your mom.

Take care!
