Q: Home care service

If you know this home care service that we are having is not paying the caregivers properly (no proof but very obvious from the way the caregivers and ex-caregivers act; they pay as they wish each time period, the rate goes up and down according to the performance each time or every 2 weeks!),

and we don't exactly get along with the agency, would you just drop the home care service and go check out a nursing home? Does this say to you that you would not trust them even though the patient is ok with the service, but hurting the family?

This is our situation now: the home care service seems to have some problems. Should we continue and "follow" their advice and delay the process of going to a nursing home for my father-in-law? Do you feel that we need to be able to trust the agency?

Thanks,
Nina

Hi Nina,

I think you need to feel trust toward the agency. Are there other agencies in the area? You could check them out first, before going directly to a nuring home, unless that seems advisable for other reasons.

However, an agency that isn't paying their employees is going to have unhappy employees. This isn't good for the elder. Somewhere, it's bound to show in the care. So, if you are sure enough of this problem to cause you unease, I'd look at an alternative.

Just to let you in on a few things from experience. I have been a home care worker for many years and many agencies. There are many reputable agencies out there and if you still want your loved one at home I would suggest looking for a new one. Many agencies and many workers are out there for the wrong purposes. I currently still work for one that I love and trust everyday. I wish you the best of luck and if I can be of any assistance please feel free to contact me anytime. Reply
