Q: Caregiver is a nurse wants to quit job to take care of husband with Alz but needs financial support.

My husband was just recently DX with Alz. I want to be able to quit my job so that I can take care of him.Is this possible? I heard of some states providing financial help for caregivers. It sounds ridiculous that half of my paycheck goes to the sitter. I would like to keep him home as long as I can.He started roaming and taking lotions and Preparation H by mouth. As of now I'm paying someone $10 per hour for 2 hours to sit with him.It seems to be working well for now but I know there will be another crisis soon and it's only a matter of time when he will require a 24/7 care.Pls give me suggestions recommendations. I need help desperately. I live in the State of Ga where I was informed that it does not provide financial assistance to caregivers.I'm considering relocating to States that provide such help.

HI gracely, I don't know about financial support for caregivers like you, but sometimes the work place offers some plan to allow the caregivers to care for the loved ones. I don't know about your hospital.

I would suggest that you keep the job. A job can also offers long-term care insurance if you get one and that can cover your husband for home care or nursing home, which is expensive. You won't be able to do it all on your own without income at all. I am not sure there are plans that support caregivers at home 100%. Sadly to say, a job provides medical insurance and so it is important too. Maybe you can find caregivers toi help you out. Working part-time and getting a helper and etc.

I would be concerned about no protection without work.

Just my 2 cents,

Nina
