Q: Can you have pain from scar tissue?

My friend has had moderate to severe pain in her lower abdomen on and off for a few months. Her physician diagnosed it as scar tissue and has tried multiple NSAID's with slight relief. She can not stay on it for a prolonged time as she has to stop taking plavix which she is on due to being prone to blood clots. Can scar tissue cause pain? She has multiple pain issues in other areas such as pain in her head, which she had a CAT-SCAN and has being treated by two different neurologists. One tried accurpuncture with temp. pain relief. The other neurologist tries different medications. Migraine was ruled out. She also has a heel spur and planter fasalitis, which she then was seen by a orthopedic physician. He recommended physical therapy but was unable to continue due to the PT causing too much pain. She is in her 80's but very active . She has seen all her physicians in New York City as that is where she lives. Is there any advice you can offer and point her in the correct direction for these painful problems? Thank you for taking the time hearing me and I hope to hear from you with your recommendations.

Since she has multiple pain issues, it's hard to say if it's all connected, but yes, I"ve heard of several cases where scar tissue can attach to healthy tissue and cause a lot of pain. Some people need surgery to cut away scar tissue that is causing pain. However at 80, lots of hard choices need to be made about surgery because of dangers of elders going under anesthetics. Since her quality of life is being affected as much as this, I'd think it's something to look into.

I'm glad she is trying alternative methods. Some work, some don't. It depends on the patient, practitioner and issues. She may want to see one more physician about whether some scar tissue could be attached to, or interfering with, other tissues or how her body is functioning overall.

You sound like a wonderful friend. I hope you can help her find some relief.
