Vacation Planning with Alzheimer's?

Topics:Alzheimer'sTravel

My Aunt and Uncle are planning a trip to Alaska, from Texas.

They lived there during the 70's and share many wonderful memories. They have gone back a few times since, including a trip last Summer, to which, my Uncle has no memory of making. My Uncle has Alzheimer's. He wants to drive, my Aunt wants to fly, then rent a car during their time there.  My Uncle usually makes the final decission. I am concerned for their safety.

As far as I know, my Uncle is still in the early stage of Alzheimer's. My Aunt is 83, my Uncle 85. They are both in good physical health.

My Aunt's main concern is that, he will go without her, if he thinks she doesn't want to make this trip.

I will appreciate any advice, tips, experiences that I can share with her.

Thank you,

Kay

Hi, Caring KB,

You are right to be concerned. First of all, I'd suggest that you have someone assess your uncle's driving ability. I didn't have to do this with my mom, but did watch the documentary on HBO's Alzheimer's Project that showed a clip of someone with Alzheimer's driving, which was unnerving and showed a very unsafe driver. The woman who was driving claimed to be able to drive perfectly, but didn't understand how to back up the car, what common street signs meant, or how to follow directions. Even after the driving test, she claimed to be a sound driver and was upset by the news. Based on this segment, there is a possibility that your uncle is overestimating his ability to drive.

If they want to take the trip (which sounds like great fun), I'd strongly suggest that if your aunt and uncle opt to fly and possibly limit driving by taking tours, having outings with old friends, etc. Perhaps your aunt can suggest this way of getting to and around Alaska by suggesting that they will have more time and energy for sightseeing and visiting. Additionally, the time they spend there will be less stressful by not driving.

Take care and keep us posted!

Dorian
