I know that with my mom's medicare covered the PT for so many days and then an adjustment amount for so many.    I think it has to be ordered by Dr. as a necessity/PT.  I am not sure that medicare covers first 3 months is a blanketed statement.    I am sorry that I don't know specifics.  Mother had to put in to the nursing home for PT after breaking a hip. She was there for 30 days and then the next 30 was adjusted.  She left after completing the PT and then 35 days later she had to be admitted back to the nursing home due to a UTI which left her so weak that she again had to have PT.  If there is 30 days or more between admissions then medicare covers so many days fully and then adjust accordingly for 2 months and then depending on your income, insurance, you would have to private pay or qualify for medicaid.  I am not sure of the time frame for each, but pretty close and I know that 3 months is all you have assistance with unless you qualify for other assistance. Hope this helps some.

The last time I checked medicare, the rule is that the person needs to be hospitalized for 4 days at least and then the doctor needs to write up something about the need of a nursing home. Then medicare can cover the first 5 months or so (150 days). After that, you need to pay in private. You cannot just send the person to the nursing home out of the blue from the private home and ask the doctor to sign for it. It has to go from the hospital.

So sometimes I am thinking to wait for my father-in-law to go from the hospital if we could so as to save some cost. But it is not up to us whether he will get sick at the right time or not. So we can only see what happens. If he needs to go to the nursing home  before he is hospitalized for serious illness, we just have to send him to a home with private pay.

Take care,

Nina
