A new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine has found that folic acid supplements do not reduce the risk for heart disease, cancer, or death. The researchers say they reached this conclusion despite evidence that these B vitamins do reduce levels of homocysteine, a protein associated with cardiovascular disease. But scientists found no harmful effects from consuming multivitamins or foods that have been fortified with folic acid.
