Growth hormone drug fails to slow Alzheimer's: study

Drugmaker Merck has discontinued research on an experimental Alzheimer's medication called MK-677. The drug stimulated the release of a natural growth hormone that researchers hoped would reduce the level of plaque in the brain. Research on 416 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's showed that the medication did increase the amount of growth hormone, but that the increased level did not slow the progression of the disease when compared with patients who took a placebo.
