Sharp-witted seniors shed light on Alzheimer's

Elderly people with a sharp memory are helping to shed light on Alzheimer's disease, researchers say. These "super-aged" people appear to have the same amount of beta-amyloid plaque in their brain as people with dementia, and yet they have not developed Alzheimer's. But researchers did find that these seniors had fewer tau protein brain tangles than people who had dementia. Experts say this may mean that future research into Alzheimer's may focus more on tau brain tangles, and that medications may target those rather than brain plaques.
