Zyprexa, Seroquel linked to heart risks
(HealthDay News) UPDATED 2009-01-14
Researchers at Vanderbilt School of Medicine have found that newer antipsychotic drugs such as Seroquel and Zyprexa appear to increase users' risk of sudden death due to cardiac arrest. In their new study, investigators looked at the health records of 44,218 patients who used older antipsychotics, 46,089 patients on the newer antipsychotics, and 186,600 people who were not on antipsychotics. They found that users of the newer antipsychotics were 2.26 times more likely to suffer from sudden cardiac death than those not on the medications. Those who used the older drugs were 1.99 times more likely to die than those not taking this type of medication. Researchers say that the odds of users having a heart problem are low, but that doctors, families, and patients should still be cautious.
